Table Etiquette & Sportsmanship

Before · During · After the Game
The rulebook won't tell you "will this annoy my opponent?" 40K is a game for two, and a good opponent matters more than a good list. Here are 20 community-consensus etiquette rules — pre-game conversation, dice handling, take-backs, and how to win or lose with grace. Follow these and you'll become the opponent people fight to be paired with.

The Pre-Game Five

Sit down, shake hands, and clear these five questions before placing a single model:

How long have you played 10th?" Lets both sides calibrate teaching pace.
Casual or competitive?" Prevents WAAC lists from crushing narrative builds.
每人幾小時?」"Leviathan or Pariah Nexus? How many hours each?"
  5. 反悔政策Take-Back Policy: 「如果我動完才發現算錯,可以反悔嗎?」"If I make a mistake after committing, can I take it back?"

1. Before the Game

01
Be on time, or communicate
If you'll be more than 10 min late, text ahead. Your opponent paid for this afternoon too.
02
Bring a printed army list
Paper or phone both fine, but it must be legible and show every unit's Enhancement, attached Character, and point total. Opponent should glance once and understand.
03
Share lists before deployment
10e missions expect lists exchanged before deployment. It's both a rule and a courtesy — lets your opponent pick Fixed secondaries sensibly.
04
Declare proxies upfront
"The armless one is my Lieutenant; I'm subbing a Captain model" — says it upfront, zero friction.
可接受Fine
Clearly labeled, similar size, similar weapons.
不 OKNot cool
A Rhino for a Knight, or a shrub for a Daemon — breaks visual recognition.

2. During the Game

05
Declare your intent at every step
"I'm moving this squad 6" to that building" — announce before doing. Opponent gets a chance to rules-check or declare Overwatch.
06
Roll dice in a designated zone
Roll in the table center or a dice tray. Dice rattling into mini groups knocks them over, and off-table rolls don't count.
Cocked dice (on a model, on a book, falling off-table) = re-roll that die.
07
Measure honestly
10e allows pre-measurement anywhere, anytime. Don't stretch the tape; don't hand-wave "looks like".
08
Take-backs, with limits
"Oh, I forgot this weapon has Assault — let me redo it." Usually OK in casual play if (a) no new info observed and (b) opponent agrees. Generally disallowed in tournaments.
Forgetting an aura buff, misplacing unit facing, missing +1 attack.
Don't
Taking back after seeing the roll, or changing target after failing a charge.
09
Rules disputes: check the book, not each other
Don't argue "I think it works like..." for 5 minutes. Open the rulebook or Wahapedia; if still unclear, roll off for this turn.
10
Watch your pace
Slow play is a tournament sin. Ten-minute phases and 30-second die-decisions burn your opponent out. Set a mental pace; when unsure, commit and roll.
If you're at round 3 after 40 minutes of a 3-hour game, you're the slow one.
11
Save tactics talk for after
"You should've put the Scouts over there" during their turn is infuriating. If they're new and want to learn, ask first: "Want suggestions, or prefer to try yourself?"
12
Announce which ability does the killing
"Your Captain dies to Devastating Wounds here." Keeps opponent informed and teaches him the interaction.
13
Remind opponent of missed stratagems
"Want a Command Re-Roll?" — especially for new players. Optional in competitive play, but generous and classy in casual games.

3. Winning & Losing

14
Don't concede too early
Turn 2 after your big guns fall and you concede? Your opponent spent 30 min setting up and an hour driving. Play through at least round 4 — maybe you pull it back, maybe you practice endgame.
15
Don't rub in a lead
"Want to concede?" "You're done, right?" — even leading 30 points, don't. Play it out; your opponent gets to practice losing positions.
16
The loser offers the handshake first
(Old wargaming tradition.) The loser initiates "good game." The winner accepts without bragging. Both thank each other and help pack up.
17
Don't blame the dice
"I rolled five 1s on eight dice, so you only won on luck" — tells your opponent he didn't deserve it. Dice betray you; that's the game.

4. Community-Specific Situations

18
Teaching a new player
Bring a "teaching list" — balanced, explainable, not your tournament build. A 15–10 win is enough, not 100–0. Make them feel "I could beat this next time."
19
Unpainted models
Casual: grey plastic is fine, as long as opponent consented. Tournaments: usually require Battle-Ready or above. Don't sneer at grey minis — everyone started there.
20
Help set up and tear down
At a store: help lay out the table and terrain before, and help tear down after. Don't leave it to the staff or your opponent.

社群暗號:認識「WAAC」、「NPE」Know the Community Jargon: WAAC & NPE

WAAC — WAAC(不擇手段)。 — "Win At All Costs." Describes players who bend rules, slow-play, obscure intent, or push tiny advantages. Once the community calls you WAAC, it sticks.
— "Negative Play Experience." Describes lists or combos that leave the opponent miserable regardless of outcome — one-sided, no agency, not fun. Ask first before bringing one.
Winning one game is small. Being the opponent everyone wants to play against brings you infinite games. Play the long game.
